A magical, ancient race: the Moroi. The Moroi don't wear black capes, turn into bats, or sleep in coffins. Daylight annoys yet doesn't kill them and they don't sparkle either. But yes, like most creatures with fangs, the Moroi live off blood. But they don't live forever. That's why they need us.

Spirit Bound

The Moroi are benevolent vampires that are born as opposed to the Strigoi, who are turned. The Moroi are imbued with the power to control one of the elements and are led by the King and Queen, who in turn are elected from one of the twelve Royal Families.

The Moroi rely on the protection of Dhampir Guardians, half-human, half-Moroi combatants who provide protection to both Royals and non-Royals alike.

Appearance[]

Moroi are said to be very beautiful. Moroi's skin is described as being very pale, and their bodies are slim and tall. Moroi are taller and slimmer than humans and Dhampirs, and naturally have less muscle mass. In comparison to their Dhampir guardians, they look pale, tall, and slender.

Due to their slim bodies, female Moroi in general have smaller breasts and slimmer hips than their Dhampir cousins, who are usually more curvaceous. Moroi females and males are described as possessing a supernatural beauty. They have a pair of fangs that do not retract (in the movie and TV adaptations, however, their fangs are retractable).

Attributes[]

Most Moroi do not feel comfortable being in the sunlight, though they can still be outside during the day. Often, Moroi can use magic; the length of their magical capabilities is shown in Spirit Bound. Moroi use the elements earth, water, fire, and air, combining them to make the Alchemist tattoo (golden flower). It is common for a Moroi to specialize in one of the elements: air, fire, earth, water, or spirit, the latter having been forgotten for a long time. Moroi who specialized in the spirit element were thought to have not specialized at all. Moroi also have a special ability called compulsion, which forces their will onto their victim through eye contact. Strigoi and spirit users have heightened compulsion compared to regular Moroi. Moroi are not allowed to use their abilities offensively, only defensively. This is why they want Dhampirs as guardians to protect them. Though it is known that Moroi used to fight alongside their Dhampir guardian in the past (using both offensive and defensive abilities). The users of water, fire, earth, and air are drawing their powers from each element. Only spirit users draw their powers from their minds and bodies.

Diet[]

The diet of the Moroi consists of human blood. At the academy, staff provide access to human donors who supply blood for Moroi students. The Moroi student gets daily meals at the academy. However, Moroi also require regular food in addition to blood, though not quite as much as humans. Moroi can go without feeding for about two days without any side effects. However, after two days, the Moroi begin to show signs of decline, including dark circles under their eyes, diminished strength, and even paler skin.

Structure[]

See: Moroi Royal Families

The Moroi rule the shadows and lie in status above both the Dhampir and the Strigoi, with the latter being outcasts. The Moroi are led by the King or Queen, who is selected from one of the twelve Royal Families. Despite the power of the monarch, most decisions within the Dominion are made by the Royal Council, which is formed of one member from each of the Royal Families; the decisions of the Royal Council are final but can be vetoed by the monarch, although this is rarely done. [1]

The oldest member of a Royal Family gets the title of "Prince" or "Princess." Royal Moroi are supposed to have at least two Guardians. Since there are more Moroi than Dhampirs, many Moroi have to make do without a Guardian, but this does not apply to Royals, who come first.

Despite the power of the monarch, they are occasionally beholden to the wishes of the Church. Without the support of the Church, the monarch is unable to lead effectively, and the High Priestess Irene cites on one occasion that if the Queen named Victor Dashkov as her successor, he would not have the support of the Church and thus would fail to rule effectively. Language[]

Aazh Naamori is the Moroi language.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Compulsion: Moroi are able to control the minds of humans, dhampirs, and other Moroi to a certain degree through eye contact and verbal commands. Spirit users are the strongest in this ability.
  • Elements: Moroi have magical abilities that allow them to control the elements of earth, air, fire, water, and spirit. Moroi often specialize in one element in particular.
  • Enhanced Immune System: Moroi don't get sick like humans. Although they can contract diseases, especially terminal diseases, it is unusual for Moroi to get sick or catch viruses.
  • Enhanced Senses: Moroi have stronger senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch than humans. Moroi are shown to be able to distinguish between Moroi/Dhampir/Human blood by taste.
  • Enhanced Speed: Moroi are faster than humans but aren't as fast as Strigoi and Dhampirs.
  • High Life Expectancy: Moroi are not immortal like Strigoi, but they still live longer than most humans. Most Moroi live up to 100–110 years old, although some can far exceed that.
  • Hunger Resistance: Moroi do not have to kill in order to feed, unlike Strigoi, who always kill their bite victims, and instead feed in small, non-lethal increments.
  • Limited Darkness Adaptation: Moroi possess better night vision than humans, being able to see even in very dim illumination such as starlight.
  • Regenerative Healing Factor: Moroi heal easier and quicker than humans, allowing them to recover from injuries quickly so long as they feed.
  • Supernatural Beauty: Moroi are known to be highly attractive. They are immensely beautiful, slim, and tall; their skin is pale. However, Moroi do not need to have all of these features.

Weaknesses[]

  • Mortality: Despite their healing factor, Moroi are still mortal and can die of advanced diseases, exsanguination, and severe injuries. They also weaken with age, just like humans.
  • Physical Weakness: Moroi aren't very strong physically and are absolutely no match for Strigoi. Compared to Dhampirs, Moroi are generally physically weaker and less nimble.
  • Sunlight: Moroi are sensitive to sunlight, and while exposure to sunlight is not lethal to Moroi, it is very uncomfortable. In the TV series, prolonged exposure burns them.

Afflictions[]

Relationships[]

A Royal Moroi having a relationship with someone of a lower status is often frowned upon. Dhampir usually have relationships with Moroi, thus creating more Dhampir and continuing their race. A romantic relationship between a Moroi and a Dhampir during their teenage years is seen as normal, but adult relationships between the two are frowned upon due to inherent complications.

Reproduction[]

Moroi are born through the union of two Moroi.

  1. In Near Guard, Far Guard, Victor Dashkov asks the Queen to overturn the rule of the Royal Council, but she remarks that the final decision lies with the Council. Nonetheless, Victor implores her, citing that she is the only one with the power to overturn the decision.
  2. In Beyond the Wards, the representative of the Church warns the Queen not to name Dashkov as her successor as in doing so, the monarchy would lose the support of the Church and thus, efforts to rule would be futile.
