I've heard many things about you, Rose. Don't worry. It was all good.

—Tasha Ozera

Natasha Ozera was a royal Moroi. She was introduced as Christian Ozera's aunt in the series' second book, Frostbite.

Biography[]

Although the Ozeras were once among the most well-respected royal families in Moroi society, their reputation became tainted after Christian's parents willingly turned into Strigoi. This act of betrayal cast a dark shadow over the remaining family members, including Tasha.

Her element is fire, just like her nephew, Christian. She's a martial arts teacher in the human world, which she mentions when she is speaking to Rose. Tasha also believes that the Moroi should use their magic to fight alongside the Dhampir Guardians; she's actually one of the few who thinks the Dhampir Guardians should be treated better. She uses offensive magic and self-defense.

Appearance[]

Tasha was described as having 'raven-black' hair. She had a heart shaped face with large, ice-blue eyes. Like all Moroi, she has very pale skin and is tall. Her lips were described as being a pale pink color. Overall, she was described as having a very attractive appearance, despite having raised, purplish scars across her left cheek. Rose describes them as looking like someone had bitten into her face, tearing out part of her cheek. It's learned that, after turning Strigoi, her brother Lucas had bitten a good portion of Tasha's while she was trying to protect Christian and had given her the scar. Rose comments that while the scars clearly messed her face up, they managed to complete her somehow.

Personality[]

Natasha was portrayed as a friendly, social, and outspoken person. Her political beliefs are very progressive; she continually pushed for Moroi to learn how to fight Strigoi, and she believed that by actively helping Dhampirs fight against them, Strigoi attacks would become less of a problem. She was shown as having a very blunt nature and being brutally honest, so long as her honesty helped her get what she wanted. That sort of behavior earned her the scorn of her more conservative family when she was younger. Certainly, she was a thorn in the side of many high-ranking Royal Moroi officials. She had very controversial tastes for a member of Moroi society. All of her known intended relationships were with male Dhampir guardians. Those were Vinh, Dimitri Belikov, and Ethan Moore. Despite her positive qualities, Tasha was extremely cunning and ambitious in less-than-honorable ways. She had a very self-serving nature, and her jealousy of Rose Hathaway and her relationship with Dimitri Belikov brought out some of Tasha's uglier traits. Towards the end of her portrayal in the series, she was shown as desperate and violent, killing or nearly killing several other characters. She was not above using her flirtatious nature to manipulate others to achieve certain ends.

Relationships[]

Relatives[]

The state of Tasha's relationship with her parents and brother is ultimately unknown. However, her sadness over the fates of her brother and sister-in-law may show that they had a good relationship before they turned. She showed a moderate to high level of scorn and disapproval for most of the members of her extended family.

Christian Ozera[]

Christian Ozera is the son of Tasha's brother, Lucas. After willingly turning Strigoi, Christian's parents came back to kidnap him. They had plans to supposedly turn him into a Strigoi after he had grown older. Tasha protected Christian and stalled Lucas and Moira until the Guardians could come to her aid. After his parents deaths, she became a motherly-sisterly figure towards Christian. She ultimately raised him, loved him, cared for him, and taught him whatever offensive fire magic she knew. At the end of Last Sacrifice, he frequently went to visit her in jail before her execution.

Romances[]

Vinh Duy Khuc[]

Vinh went to St. Vladimir's with Tasha, and the two were romantically involved and very much in love with each other. However, after graduation, Vinh was assigned to the Ozeras (which is later found out to be because he requested to be there because he could not stay away from Tasha), and due to his professionalism and duty to his job and the general Moroi disdain for Moroi-dhampir relations, Vinh and Tasha did not continue their relationship. They suppressed their love.

Vinh was an exceptional Guardian, and he was one of Christian's favorites, as he treated him like an equal and was kind to the then nine-year-old boy. He was always polite and professional with Tasha, except when the two were alone, at which times he would drop the formalities a little bit, calling her Lady Tasha instead of Lady Ozera or Lady Natasha. Sometimes, he would speak to her in what Tasha described as poetic words. However, the two always aimed for minimal physical contact.

The night that Lucas and Moira Ozera turned Strigoi, Tasha and Christian were at court, even though Christian was not supposed to be. He had snuck out of going with his parents. Vinh was the Guardian staying with them. They were to leave the next morning to join Christian's parents, but upon hearing they had turned Strigoi, they went to the second home of a distant relative instead (Ronald Ozera). There, a distraught Tasha was comforted by Vinh, and for the first time since graduating from St. Vladimir's, the two finally embraced and eventually kissed.

They were interrupted, however, by the arrival of Lucas and Moira, now Strigoi, who had come to take Christian. Vinh, with no weapons, began to defend Tasha. He told her to run, and she did, but not before watching her brother and sister-in-law kill the man she loved.

Vinh was the one Tasha had first told about her plan to use Moroi's powers in an offensive way and to have Moroi learn to fight. He had told her to go to any place taught by humans and learn there, because the chances of a Guardian teaching her to fight were unlikely. After his death and the staking of Lucas and Moira, Tasha moved into the human world in Minneapolis, where she learned to fight at a boxing gym.

The death of Vinh left an empty hole in Tasha, causing her to vow to herself that if she ever found love again, she would not waste any time. There was only so much life to live, and she did not want to feel this way ever again. This was why she was so attached to Dimitri, causing her to hate and be jealous of Rose so much that she wanted to frame her.

Dimitri Belikov[]

Dimitri and Tasha were initially portrayed in Frostbite as being old friends. The two were very close and got along well, and she made her romantic feelings towards him very clear throughout the story. She eventually asked Dimitri to become her Guardian in hopes of their relationship evolving into something more romantic (it's mentioned in the series that she was willing to have Dhampir children to be with him). Despite his initial consideration, Dimitri eventually declined her offer. He claimed that, while he believed she was an amazing woman, his heart belonged to someone else: Rose. Following his rejection, Tasha quietly grew jealous and began secretly hating Rose for taking Dimitri away from her. After Lissa brought Dimitri back from being a Strigoi, Tasha was a major advocate for his return to normal vampiric society. She eventually murdered the late Queen Tatiana Ivashkov, framing Rose in hopes that, after her execution, Dimitri would finally choose to be with Tasha.

Enemies[]

Queen Tatiana Ivashkov[]

Tasha and Tatiana's antagonistic relationship was primarily on a political level. Tasha was angry about the Queen's passed laws regarding the lowering of the age required for dhampirs to become guardians. She also believed that the Queen held more traditional views on the involvement of Moroi fighting and seeking out Strigoi. While part of her reasons for killing the Queen involved her desire to remove Rose from her romantic situation, she also wanted the Queen gone in hopes that the next reigning king or queen would share her more progressive political beliefs.

Rosemarie Hathaway[]

When Tasha and Rose first met in Frostbite, they got along very well with each other. But after finding out that Rose was the true object of Dimitri's affections and the reason that Dimitri couldn't be with her, Tasha's antagonistic feelings for Rose began to fester. With hopes of removing her from the situation permanently, Tasha framed Rose for the murder of the late Queen Tatiana Ivashkov in Spirit Bound. After Dimitri helped Rose escape and collect enough evidence to prove that Tasha had been the one to commit the murder, Rose returned to the Royal Court and called Tasha out in front of a room full of royal Moroi. In her desperation, Tasha then shot off her gun, accidentally aiming directly at Lissa's chest. Rose jumped in front of Lissa, taking the bullet for her friend instead; Tasha was immediately taken into custody following the act.
