Some part of you will always ... fight to cling to life and experience all it has. That's why you're so reckless in the things you do. You don't hold back your feelings, your passion, your anger. It makes you remarkable. It makes you dangerous.

—Victor Dashkovsrc

Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway (b.late March) is a dhampir and the only child and daughter of famous Moroi Abe Mazur and renowned Guardian Janine Hathaway. She is the Guardian of her best friend and Queen of the Moroi Vasilisa Dragomir. She is also the girlfriend and lover of respected Guardian Dimitri Belikov.

Rose is a widely known and popular Guardian; even as a novice, she was extremely well known for making her first Strigoi kills at only seventeen years of age.

Physical Appearance

Rose describes herself as having "semi-exotic desert princess" features. She has big dark eyes and hair so deep
brown that it usually looks black with a red tint to it. She is 5'7" tall with skin the same color as the inside of an almond and has a curvy and athletic figure common to most dhampirs. Her physical appearance is the result of a Scottish mother and a Turkish father.

Personality

Rose is a caring person who is often snappy and reckless at times. She is also irrationally angry during stressful periods of her life due to spirit's darkness. Rose is very energetic, outgoing and is always willing to help a friend in need. She is a very committed guardian and takes her job seriously. Her snarky and witty personality is considered similiar to Christian Ozera's. Though she can be very fiery and stubborn, she has a good heart and only wants to protect those she cares about. Her personality traits are also very similiar to those of her father, Abe Mazur, though Rose doesn't like to admit it. She and her father are both charming, cocky, a little arrogant and proud. Rose is very dedicated to her job as a guardian and is willing to freely accept death if she is protecting those she loves, most notably Lissa and Dimitri.

One thing that is learned throughout the series is that though she has a fiesty attitude and puts on an over-confident bravado she is actually quite an emotional character, only willing to open up to those she truly trusts. She also enjoys the hormonal rush of a Moroi bite, but refuses to admit it.

Biography

Vampire Academy

She and Lissa are found by several guardians and taken back to the Academy. When they're found is when Rose first meets Dimitri. At first, Headmistress Kirova wants to send her away, but Dimitri speaks up for her, so she's allowed to stay on probation. Rose accepts so that she can stay with Lissa. Soon, she finds out about Anna and St. Vladimir, who may have had a bond like hers with Lissa. During the night of the dance, Rose was sent back to her room and knew that something was wrong with Lissa.

She went to warn Dimitri, but she felt a force pulling her to him. Dimitri knew something was wrong, but when he touched her, he fell under the lust charm in the necklace Rose was wearing. They almost made love but Dimitri realized what was going on and threw the necklace out the window. Rose then leads the guardians to Lissa, and held off the psi-hounds. Lissa wanted to save Christian but didn't have enough power. Rose then let Lissa take blood from her in order to bring Christian back. She visits Victor to ask him about the lust charm and why he kidnapped Lissa.

When Natalie shows up and attacks Rose, Dimitri rushes to her rescue and as he takes her to the clinic, he tells her that they can't be together because they'll endanger the Moroi that they're supposed to protect. He says that he wishes they could be together but if he lets himself love her, then he'll reflexively throw himself in front of her instead of Lissa.

Frostbite

Rose travels with Dimitri to meet Guardian Arthur Schoenberg for her qualifier exam. When they arrive at the residence of the family he protects, they find the entire family brutally murdered, including Arthur. Rose finds a silver stake at the crime scene, something a Strigoi is unable to touch, heavily implying that humans may have been involved. The community is on high alert after the incident, and the Academy requires everyone to go to a Moroi ski lodge for their Christmas vacation. Rose is unpleasantly surprised by the reappearance of her famous Guardian mother, Janine Hathaway, and tension quickly rises between the two. She is also overcome with jealousy when she sees Dimitri with Natasha Ozera, who advances on him and goes as far as asking him to be her Guardian.

Tragedy strikes yet again when news of another attack on a Moroi family spreads, one of the casualties being that of Mia's mother. Rose meets Adrian Ivashkov, who is clearly interested in her. He befriends Lissa after discovering their affinity for spirit. Following an intense argument with Dimitri, Rose gives Mason confidential information about the Strigoi's possible whereabouts. She is horrified when she learns that Eddie, Mia and Mason have gone out on their own to hunt down the Strigoi in Spokane, and she and Christian head out to stop them.

Fortunately, Rose and Christian find the trio and manage to convince them to return to the lodge. However, they are ambushed by Strigoi, who hold them captive for days and threaten to kill them. Rose eventually comes up with a plan to escape, and they all manage to get out of the house into the protection of the light, except Rose, who is left fighting two Strigoi, Isaiah and Elena. Tragically, Mason is killed by Isaiah when he returns and attempts to help Rose. Rose then kills both of the Strigoi by beheading them, and collapses into shock, just as Guardians arrive. Once back at St. Vladimir's, Rose receives two molnija marks for her Strigoi kills. Dimitri also tells her that he turned down Tasha's offer to become her guardian, admitting that his heart is with Rose.

Shadow Kiss

When Rose is out on a late-night walk, she hides when Alberta comes to talk to Dimitri about re-arranging his shift because they're going to court to testify at Victor Dashkov's trial. She sees Mason's ghost when she returns to her dorm but dismisses it as an illusion caused by her lack of sleep. When the assignments for the finals are announced, she is shocked that she is assigned to Christian and tells Alberta that they will regret placing her with Christian. Stan launches his "attack" but Mason appears and Rose is immobile with shock. Rose is scrutinized by Stan for not responding to the fake Strigoi attack.

Later on, she, Lissa, Christian, and Eddie are informed they can go to Court and testify at the hearing. On the plane, she has glimpses of shadows and has a horrible headache. Lissa can't heal her, which comes as a shock. Victor sends a message to her, trying to find information about Lissa. He tells her that the more she deals out death, the closer she'll be to it. At the trial, Victor makes a sexual inneundo but no one believes him. When Victor is found guilty, Adrian Ivashkov gives Rose a congratulating hug. Lissa is called to the Queen and then is asked if Rose can talk to the queen. Rose arrives, only to discover that the Queen is convinced that she and Adrian are having an affair; she tells Rose of her plan to marry Lissa and Adrian.

After returning to the Academy, the Mana, an 'elite' group of compulsion users, torture Lissa to get her to join them. Rose takes them out but Lissa tortures Jesse with spirit. Rose takes the darkness from Lissa but, as a result, is filled with an uncontrollable urge to kill Jesse. Several guardians come and break up the gathering, and Dimitri takes her away to calm her down. When Dimitri manages to calm her down, they then end up making love in the cabin. When they leave, Rose senses Strigoi on campus and Dimitri tells her to run, and tell the guardians Buria, which means "storm" in Russian.

She finds Christian on her way to the chapel and they end up burning and staking a large number of Strigoi with their combined skills. After the battle is over, she suggests a rescue mission, and Mason shows her where the Strigoi are hiding with their captives. She goes on the rescue mission which was almost successful, but Strigoi jumped them when they were retreating. Rose then sees Dimitri get taken down by one of the Strigoi. She wants to stay behind and tries to reach him, but her mother stops her and she runs. Mason tells her that Dimitri is now a Strigoi, and she decides to leave the Academy - and Lissa - to hunt down Dimitri so she can kill him; this is a testament to the two's promise to kill the other if they turned Strigoi.

Blood Promise

After the attack on St Vladimir's, Rose chooses to leave Lissa to hunt and kill Dimitri because of a promise they had made previously while coming back from a mall. She travels to Siberia, where Dimitri was born, with the help of an Alchemist named Sydney Sage. She spends some time with Dimitri's family and meets Oksana and Mark, a couple who are also spirit bound. She joins up with a group of unpromised dhampirs who go to Novsibirsk to hunt for Strigoi. After a few days she finds Dimitri. She's about to stake him but she hesistates, allowing Dimitri to abduct her. Dimitri tries to convince her into awakening her so they can be together for eternity by showering her with Strigoi bites almost every time he visits. Eventually she escapes captivity by staking him and throwing him off a bridge then heads back to Novsibrisk. She visits Lissa as Avery, another spirit user, is trying to kill Lissa. She then helps Lissa battle Avery and Reed (her spirit bound brother) and Simon, Avery's spirit bound guardian. Adrian comes to help in the fight, which leaves Avery fried from abusing her power. Rose then returns to the academy and fulfills her promise to Adrian Ivashkov, finally giving him a chance to be with her. She is horrified when she recieves a package enclosed with her stake and a note from Dimitri, revealing that she hadn't killed him and that he will be waiting for her.

Spirit Bound

This book starts off with Rose walking to her trials, meeting Lissa along the way who gives her a ring charmed with spirit. We find that Lissa has been trying to charm things with spirit, some of which have gone bad. They part ways when she is pulled away to prepare for her trials. Of course, Adrian isn't far away, and he makes comments about how great a guardian she is. When he leaves, Rose soon has to go out onto the field to start her trial. Because of her undeniable experience in killing real Strigoi (which she aquired while in Siberia, looking for Dimitri), she is given extra challenges, ones that are easily passed with her skill. When her scores are announced, they're the best in the class overall (only the trial, because she doesn't excel in academic subjects).

Within the next few days, the new guardians are shipped off to Court and showed off to the Moroi who might ask for them. Of course, none ask for Rose except for Lissa and Tasha Ozera, who is only allowed to have another guardian so that she will quieten down about Moroi combat. But, later in the book, it is shown that she has a small chance of being made a guardian because of her wild disappearance from St Vladimir's Academy, as well as other disciplinary concerns.

They get help from Mia Rinaldi and get into the headquarters of the Guardians to steal paperwork about Tarasov, the prison where Victor is held (information given to Rose by her father, Abe, when he arrives at one of the parties). When Rose is about to escape with information about the prison, she runs into Mikhail, otherwise known as the former lover of Sonya Karp. After speaking to him about the chance that Rose has of changing Dimitri back to a dhampir, he says he'll help them, and lets her go. All video footage of them at the headquarters is erased with Lissa's compulsion on one of the guardians.

Leaving a note saying that she's going on an all girl weekend with Lissa, Rose disappears with Eddie and Lissa to go break Victor out of prison. They get inside by using charms infused with compulsion which make them look like humans. They get inside, are allowed to be fed off of, and change the schedule so that Victor Dashkov is the next to come in. Victor is motioned to by Rose to swing his chains at the guardians to make it look like he is trying to attack them; this gives Rose time to attack the guardians themselves. Lissa compulses a few, keeping one who is rather hard to control. They barely make it out of the prison, but they are never thought of being the three who released Victor.

They then head to Las Vegas where Victor's half brother Robert lives, who knows how to return a Strigoi back to a Moroi or Dhampir using a silver stake charmed with spirit. But they soon have a run in with Dimitri, and the two Moroi escape. Rose narrowly gets away from Dimitri while she tries to stop Eddie from killing him. However, they all know that Dimitri killed many guards who were coming to investigate the sound of an alarm (made by Lissa and others when opening an emergency door). When they find Adrian and Lissa, the other two Moroi have vanished.

Upon their return to Court, many of the high ranked people there are annoyed and irritated with what Eddie and Rose did by taking Adrian and Lissa away without authorization.

Queen Tatiana, before the group's sudden departure, had scheduled a trip to Lehigh where Lissa would be going to college the coming year. At the time, Rose had been allowed to go, but after the past events took place, she was then banned from the trip. Priscilla Vode and Christian Ozera then accompany them with numerous guards. Afterwards, Lissa's two guardians start teaching them how to protect themselves, which backfires when sexual tension sets in.

On the night of her dinner, Rose tunes into Lissa's mind and discovers that Strigoi are attacking them. She finds that Dimitri is attacking them with the intent of capturing them and using them as bait for Rose. She takes this and then sets off with other guardians who are going to save the Dragomir princess. When Rose gets her chance to stake Dimitri, Lissa pushes her out of the way and uses a stake she had charmed with spirit the day before. Before Rose's eyes, Lissa saves Dimitri's soul and changes him back to a dhampir. He starts crying in her arms, guilty and depressed after he remembers the innocents he has killed and the horrible things he had done to Rose.

When they get back to the Court, Rose wants to see Dimitri but is denied since Dimitri has only asked for Lissa. He doesn't want to see Rose after what he had done to her. But Mikhail, a couple of days later, sneaks her in, only to be thrown out after he gets angry at her for doing this against his wishes. Days later, when he is released after being cleared as a dhampir, he says that his love for her has faded; brutally hurt, she runs away from him. An hour or so later, she nearly has sex with Adrian, but stops when she finds he has no protection. She then offers her neck to him and he drinks, making it "the best non-sex ever" according to Adrian.

When she wakes up the next morning, she leaves Adrian in her room and goes to the cafe to sit with Lissa, who is, at the time, lonely. But when she arrives, she finds that Christian has already taken the seat. She also sees Dimitri, but she tries to do the unexpected until his guards start small talk with him, talking about the age decree, which starts his talking. She is angered when he urges her to talk to Tasha, telling her to give a note to her a telling her to meet him sometime to talk about that. Dimitri tells her that he is not helping her by staying in her life. He also tells her that he is not able to love anymore, and should move on with Adrian.

Only moments later, she is brought to prison, a main suspect in the case of the Queen Tatiana's murder; she was killed the previous night in her chambers. Her lawyer during the hearing is Abe, her father, who fails to stop the case from going to trial. She receives a note from Ambrose, which was written by Tatiana before her death. It states that Eric Dragomir had an illegitimate child with a mistress. It would allow Lissa to take part in court decisions as the official representative of her line, should that child be found and brought to Court. Rose then finds out that if she is found guilty of high treason, as the murderer of a monarch she'll be executed.

Last Sacrifice

The day before Tatiana's funeral, Lissa deliberately blocked Rose from her mind which made Rose suspect that something was wrong. On the day of Tatiana's funeral procession, it turns out that they were staging a prison break. Rose escaped with Dimitri as her bodyguard, and met up with Sydney. Meanwhile, the others back at Court were trying to find the real murderer to clear Rose's name. Rose then meets Victor Dashkov and Robert Doru in her dreams, and Victor suggests to her that Lissa should campaign for queen in order to stall time; he knows this would leave those at Court divided. After they leave her dreams, Adrian enters. She tells Adrian about making Lissa run for queen, much to his surprise, but he obliges anyway. Rose realises that they have to find Sonya Karp, her former teacher, in order to look for Lissa's half-sibling. Victor and Robert meets up with them at Sonya's house and Robert turns Sonya back to a Moroi. With that, Sonya leads them to Jill Mastrano's house. Rose realises what this means and after a confrontation with Jill's parents, Emily revealed the truth that Eric Dragomir and herself had had an affair. Later, guardians suddenly raided the house and Rose and Dimitri barely escape with their lives. They steal a car and stay unnoticed at a campsite. Sonya appears in Rose's dreams and it is implied that she escaped from the raid as well. Jill, however, is being held captive by Victor and Robert, and Sydney was caught by the guardians. After Sonya meets up with Rose and Dimitri, they go to rescue Jill and while fighting Victor, darkness overwhelms Rose and she ends up killing Victor unintentionally. Afterwards, Dimitri tried to reason with Rose and calm her down, and tells Rose that he still loves her. Rose is taken aback, but her hidden feelings for Dimitri all come rushing back and they make love.

Rose, Dimitri, Sonya and Jill then start to head back to Court. Rose tells Adrian in a dream for him and Mikhail to meet them at a place just under an hour away from Court at midnight. Sonya is then reunited with Mikhail and Rose looks at them, wishing that that's how her reunion with Dimitri could have been. Dimitri pulls Rose away just before shes about to leave with Mikhail to go talk to Sydney. He tells her to be careful, and kisses her on the forehead. Adrian, who comes around the corner just in time see that kiss, realises the truth, and his whole world comes crashing down. Rose feels guilty, but knows that it is the right thing to do for both of them.

Rose and Mikhail then proceed to talk to Sydney, who is being held captive by guardians in a place not far from Court. Rose is disguised by a charm Sonya made. The other Alchemist who is with Sydney then reveals to Rose information about someone he saw who came with the Moroi that Eddie had killed. The person whom he describes is then identified as the killer, and Rose could not be more shocked. They go back and tell Dimitri, Adrian and Jill who the killer is, and they all head back to Court, putting all the pieces of evidence together that truly link this person to being the killer. They enter Court disguised; however, Abe and Janine realize it's Rose after a hard look through the disguises. After Janine asks who it is, Abe says 'Who would be stupid enough to come back to Court after escaping it?'

Rose reveals that Tasha Ozera is the killer and that Jill is a Dragomir. When guardians come to take Tasha away, she becomes violent and gets ahold of a gun she stole from a guardian. She then threatens to kill Mia Rinaldi, pointing the gun at her head. Lissa then runs after them and jumps in front of Mia. Rose was aware that Lissa was going to do this and ran after as soon as she moved. Tasha, afraid of the sudden movement from Lissa, shoots bullets from the gun, and it hits Rose in the chest, who had jumped in the line of fire. Rose believes that she will die, and as Lissa and Dimitri come rushing to her side, she tries to convey that they are the two people whom she loves the most, believing that it is the end for her, and everything goes black.

Rose then wakes up in a luxurious room, with Dimitri sitting in a chair watching her. He then tells her that she healed herself miraculously. They lie together, and even though her chest hurts from bruising and stitches, lying with Dimitri leaves her feeling content.

Lissa walks in on their intimate moment, and Dimitri feeling awkward and leaves so that Lissa and Rose can talk. It is revealed that from the self-healing, the bond between Lissa and her is now gone. Sonya thinks this is because Rose healed herself with no magic from the gun attack; cutting all the threads holding her to the undead world. It also comes as a total shock that Lissa is made the queen.

Later Adrian visits her, and they talk about they're failed relationship, but Adrian is still depressed, angry and hurt at what Rose did to him. Although Rose tries to explain that she does love Adrian but just not in the same way as she loves Dimitri, and that she was faithful to him during most of the trip, Adrian is still crushed and never wants to see her again. Rose finishes with the differences between them, that he's still a victim, still learning to be a hero, whereas she has already arrived there. He scoffs at her pleas and leaves, leaving Rose wondering if she'll ever see him again.

She wakes up the next morning with Dimitri wrapped up in her arms, and she is completely content, as all they were doing was just embracing one and other. All she ever wanted was to wake up with him, something sweet and ordinary, not because they were hastily trying to catch sleep before fighting their next foe or not because they were recovering from sex they had to hide, she just wanted to wake up in his arms and have it be a good morning.

Later it is Lissa's coronation, and Rose is now her Guardian, and Dimitri is Christian's, leaving them without their previous problem of their love for one another distracting them of the Moroi they are supposed to protect. Rose is now in her proper black and white outfit with a red collar - marking that she is a royal guardian - and Abe and Janine both come to greet her. Dimitri joins them, yet he is exceptionally nervous in front of his girlfriend's parents.

Abe is then putting on his cocky attitude towards Dimitri about him dating his daughter, and that they should go off hunting into the wilderenss, far far away, and all the questions he would like to ask and all the things he would like to tell Dimitri. Though Rose is mortified, Lissa's coronation interrupts their little family drama.

Lissa is then coronated by a past queen, and shoots Rose a meaningful yet humorous look, and although Rose doesn't know what Lissa is thinking, she wonders about this. Dimitri asks what was funny, as she is smiling and Rose replies with what Liss might be thinking if they still had their bond. Dimitri, in a very bad breach of Guardian protocol, reaches for Rose's hand and pulls her towards him. They share a moment, and Rose is optimistic that they have gotten themselves into something good. Rose finally feels that she has her life back; she is a Guardian, and she knows she will continue to serve and protect Lissa. She is overjoyed that Dimitri loves her and they can be together without complications. From here, Rose is finally her own person.

She learned that Abe was her father when her mother told her when she returned from Russia. When Rose was trialed for killing the Queen, Abe became her lawyer though he failed at it. When Dimitri helped her break out of prison, they went off together to find Lissa's lost sibling. Throughout their travels, Rose refused her feelings for Dimitri, but after she was overcome with spirit and killed Victor, they both confessed their love for each other and made love again. When Dimitri was turned, Rose promised Adrian a relationship when she returned from killing Dimitri. They began a relationship after she returned (though she failed to kill Dimitri) after her heart was broken by Dimitri in Spirit Bound she nearly had sex with Adrian but allowed him to drink from her. Their relationship contiuned but came to end when Rose had sex with Dimitri on their travels together as Rose learned she loved Dimitri more than Adrian. She broke up with Adrian at the end of Last Sacrifice breaking his heart.

Mason Ashford

Mason Ashford was Rose's close friend. Mason was in love with Rose but she never returned his feelings. In Frostbite, she used Mason to rid her mind of Dimitri but couldn't. His death haunted Rose for many months as he came to her through Spirit having messages for Rose. At the end of Shadow Kiss, he finally crossed over.

Vasilisa Dragomir

Lissa is Rose's best friend. They first met in Kindergaten when Rose threw a book at the teacher because both Rose and Lissa couldn't write their long names down. When they were fifiteen, Rose was also killed in the same accident that killed Lissa's parents and brother, but Lissa used Spirit to bring Rose back making her a Shadow-Kissed Dhampir. Rose always puts Lissa interests and life before her own, as she always comes to save Lissa even if it means that she would die in the attempt to save her. Rose is the main reason why Lissa is now Queen because Rose found her younger half-sister, Jill. Their friendship has survived everything possible, as now Rose is the Guardian of Lissa.

Christian Ozera

At the beginning Christian and Rose didn't get along because Rose was jealous of Christian for being around Lissa all the time and Christian found Rose to be uncontrollable. But over time they become close friends, as Rose saved Christian from Strigoi in Spokane and he returned this favour by freeing her from prison when she was framed for killing Queen Tatiana. At the end, they have like brother-sister as they both loved each other but they also bicker between each other.
