Sarah Hyland was born in Manhattan, New York, she is the daughter of actors Melissa Canardo and Edward James Hyland. She is the older sister of act Ian Hyland, who is four years younger than her. Hyland attended a Professional Performing Acts School in Manhattan alongside several other actors.
Hyland began her acting career when she was five years old, with her first role as Howard Stern's daughter in Private Parts. She then went onto her career to portray roles such as Molly in the 1999 remake of Annie, and also portaying Brooke Shield's daughter Maddie Healy, on Lipstick Jungle on NBC. Hyland is also featured in an Olive Garden commercial.
Hyland currently plays Haley Dunphy on the ABC sitcom, Modern Family, for which she won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. In 2012, she appeared in the film Struck By Lightning.
In 2012, Hyland revealed that she had a lifetime kidney dysplasia, she recevied a kidney transplant that was donated by her father in April 2012.
