At some point, she became involved with Mikhail Tanner, an academy guardian.

Vampire Academy (TV Series)[]

Pilot[]

Sonya arrives at the Queen's birthday celebration with her father, Victor, and her sister, Mia. She catches the eye of Guardian Mikhail. Three months after the celebration, she is seen in the library getting a book for Lissa to help her prepare for her Consecration Ceremony. She compliments the yellow that Lissa is wearing. She is seen feeding the birds, something that has dubbed her the bird lady by many, including her sister.

Earth. Air. Water. Fire.[]

In Earth. Air. Water. Fire., years earlier, Sonya was unable to specialize in one element and thus was first taken to the High Priestess, followed by some counseling, before being sent away to some mysterious place where electric shock therapy was administered to her. Sadly, it took her years to be close to normal. In the present, Sonya is in the library and sees a bird perch up on one of the bookshelves. The black bird tweets and flaps its feathers. She tells the bird that she missed it. Shortly thereafter, Mikhail visits the library and mentions how he can't find the Volkov Anatomical Compendium, which he needs to check it against the Strigoi that he has been dissecting. Sonya points out how that is the seventh attack this year, which seems more than a normal seasonal spike. A frustrated Mikhail mentions how he has been saying that too, but no one on the Council wants to listen to a lowly Dhampir like him. Sonya then leans closer to him and asks the Dhampir if he is wearing cologne, to which he replies that she noticed. Sonya states how she happens to have a good nose. A nervous Mikhail then asks if she likes it on him. It takes her a few seconds to answer, but eventually she says that he smells less like a Strigoi than usual. Eventually, Mikhail goes to see Sonya again to make his intentions clear to her. However, Sonya points out that there must be a long line of normal girls he could hang out with. But he states that he doesn't like normal girls. He then mentions how he considers her smart, great with kids, and how she has a smile that lights up a room. Sometime later, Sonya shows Mikhail the pins of where each recent Strigoi was sighted outside the academy. She points out how they're in sequence. They seem to be hitting potential weak points—gates, doors, etc. Sonya continues by saying how the Strigoi that Mikhail and the other Dhampirs have encountered lately haven't just been opportunistic. They've been planning. He points out how the Strigoi don't plan. But she refutes that by questioning if they've been testing the wards as well. Sonya worries that if they find a weakness in the magic that reinforces the walls of the city, the entire capitol could be compromised, and they'd be at risk of an attack.

Death Watch[]

In Death Watch, Victor tells Sonya and Mikhail that they're overreacting. However, both of them remain firm in their belief that it's time to strengthen the wards. Victor reminds them that they still have two decades left on the enchantment cycle. But Sonya states that if they wait, they run the risk of the Strigoi finding a way to break through as the enchantment gets older and weaker. At the Dhampir bar, Sonya goes outside, and Mia asks her, "Since when did the Bird Lady hit up parties?" To which Sonya replies that it has been this way since the right person asked her. Mia continues to be nice by telling Sonya that she looks gorgeous. Sonya compliments her on her lipstick, calling it a pretty color. Mia admits that Sonya had originally picked it. She liked it on her, so she copied it. Mia then continues by saying that she used to do that a lot when she was little. She then sends Sonya away, advising her to have fun. After the whirlwind of the day's events, Victor arrives home but collapses and remains unconscious while Sonya yells for her father to wake up.

Benchmark[]

In Benchmark, Sonya greets a man named Robert, calling him Papa. Victor then comes out of the other room, telling Robert that he's fine, but Robert asks Sonya what she did in a stern tone. Later, Victor and Robert will sleep together and then discuss Sonya. Robert says that she can't risk it again, even for Victor, and thus Victor feels guilty that her daughter used elemental magic on him. Robert tells Victor he'll talk to Sonya and that he almost lost him. Victor says it came out of nowhere. Later, Sonya is in a greenhouse when Mikhail comes to meet her. He tells her about the captured Strigoi. She then proceeds to tell him she has a secret she's not supposed to tell him but wants to. According to Sonya, there is a darkness inside her that sometimes makes her act out in ways that might scare him. Mikhail reassures her that he's not easily scared. He says he knows darkness, and that right now, all he sees is light in her and their kiss. Sonya and Mikhail continue to spend time together. Sonya then heals a bird that was on the floor, and her eyes turn dark, which is noticed by Mikhail.

Near Guard, Far Guard[]

In Near Guard, Far Guard, Sonya, who was supposed to go on a date with Mikhail, is informed of his passing while she deals with her grief. The loss breaks her heart, and she attempts suicide by jumping off a balcony. However, the birds arrive to save her after she falls from the tower. Unfortunately, the birds that had saved her drop to their deaths as she leaves safely. Thus, Sonya's predicament worsens as her grip on her magic shatters.

Molnija[]

In Molnija, Sonya mentions how the people on the tour think that dhampirs are expendable. She then asks Mia if Meredith is going on the tour. She warns her sister to spend as much time with Meredith as she can. Later, when Mia has to report for an ecclesiastical reprimand for using magic against Jesse Zeklos, Sonya volunteers to go on the royal tour instead to help Victor. Victor asks Sonya for information about Jesse's father, Dane Zeklos. She uses her abilities to read their auras, finding out that Dane is ashamed of Jesse and Jesse is terrified of his father. Of course, Sonya claims the information came from Mia's notes on the Zeklos family. Elsewhere, Tatiana's aunt says to her niece that they might have underestimated Sonya, adding that Victor is targeting Tatiana's base and Dane Zeklos could affect other votes for Victor. Later, Sonya tells Mia that something happened to Meredith. Meanwhile, Sonya watches as her eyes turn black in the mirror. Her eyes then go back to normal, only for a black mark to spread all over her body. Tatiana eventually approaches Sonya, telling her that it must be hard for her to smile while bearing such a loss as Mikhail was a good man. She adds that it wasn't Mikhail's fault; it was the Council's, and they should have known he wasn't fit for field duty. Sonya replies that he was a great guardian. Tatiana counters with the suggestion that he was better suited for a desk job. She continues by saying that when she becomes queen and institutes better testing, they'll know if someone is an incompetent fighter. Sonya responds that Mikhail wasn't, because he was one of the best. Tatiana says she understands that maybe it's best to remember Mikhail that way. Once Tatiana proceeds to call Mikhail a traitor, Sonya goes to attack but is held back. Later, Sonya apologizes to Victor for trying to attack Tatiana, and Victor promises to get her help.

Beyond the Wards[]

In Beyond the Wards, back on the Royal Tour, Victor tells Sonya he will be king, but she says that they won't allow it if he doesn't look well enough. She offers to heal him again, to which Victor eventually agrees. Sonya later feeds on a feeder and gets far too into it. When Victor arrives back, he finds Sonya's feeder dead, and Sonya is nowhere to be found.

The Trials[]

In The Trials, Victor, in an effort to save his political career and spare his family any pain, is covering up the fact that Sonya drained a human of all their blood and turned Strigoi. Thus, Victor is trying to pretend that she left town but is still well and in contact with him. Once the third trial is over and Victor wins the trial and the throne, Tatiana reveals during her concession speech a massive glass case containing a Strigoi Sonya.

Darkness[]

In Darkness, it turns out that Lucas Ozera and Moira Ozera kidnapped Mia and want to trade her for Sonya's safety. After taking it up the chain to higher-ranking Guardians, they arrange to make a trade. Eventually, Lissa learns from Mia that Sonya was a spirit user like her and that it was using those powers that drove her to become a strigoi. Lissa, upon learning this, goes to speak to Victor to try and console him over the loss of his daughter.

Ascension[]

In Ascension, Mia and Lissa wind up talking about the bond Lissa has with Rose. Mia says it's like Sonya's with all the birds she saved. She then admits to feeling bad for calling her sister the bird lady. Lissa comforts her by reassuring her that Sonya knew how much Mia loved her, just as she knew how much her brother Andre Dragomir loved her.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

As a Moroi[]

  • Heightened compulsion: Moroi are able to control the minds of humans, Dhampirs, and other Moroi to a certain degree through eye contact and verbal commands. Spirit users are the strongest in this ability.
  • Elements: Moroi have magical abilities that allow them to control the elements of earth, air, fire, water, and spirit. Moroi often specialize in one element in particular.
    • Spirit: is a fifth element that is rare among the Moroi, with the signature trait of restoring life and healing others near instantaneously.
  • Enhanced Immune System: Moroi don't get sick like humans. Although they can contract diseases, especially terminal diseases, it is unusual for Moroi to get sick or catch viruses.
  • Enhanced Senses: Moroi have stronger senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch than humans. Moroi are shown to be able to distinguish between Moroi/Dhampir/Human blood by taste.
  • Enhanced Speed: Moroi are faster than humans but aren't as fast as Strigoi and Dhampirs.
  • High Life Expectancy: Moroi are not immortal like Strigoi, but they still live longer than most humans. Most Moroi live up to 100–110 years old, although some can far exceed that.
  • Hunger Resistance: Moroi do not have to kill in order to feed, unlike Strigoi, who always kill their bite victims, and instead feed in small, non-lethal increments.
  • Limited Darkness Adaptation: Moroi possess better night vision than humans, being able to see even in very dim illumination such as starlight.
  • Regenerative Healing Factor: Moroi heal easier and quicker than humans, allowing them to recover from injuries quickly so long as they feed.
  • Supernatural Beauty: Moroi are known to be highly attractive. They are immensely beautiful, slim, and tall; their skin is pale. However, Moroi do not need to have all of these features.

As a Strigoi[]

  • Darkness Adaptation: They possess perfect night vision and can see clearly even in complete darkness.
  • Enhanced Bite: Strigoi have an animalistic bite and jaw strength that allows them to shred and rend flesh.
  • Heightened compulsion: Strigoi can control the minds of humans, Dhampirs, and Moroi to a certain degree through eye contact and verbal commands.
  • Immortality: Strigoi are unable to be killed by natural causes (e.g., age, disease, heart failure, suffocation, etc.) except by staking them in the heart with a silver stake, by fire, by sunlight, or by decapitation.
  • Pain Tolerance: Strigoi can feel pain, though the older and more powerful they are, the higher their pain tolerance. Strigoi have the ability to heal from any injury within seconds.
  • Species Detection: With ease, they are able to distinguish between Strigoi, dhampirs, Moroi, witches, and ordinary people. Although dhampirs look almost like humans, they are recognized with ease by Strigoi via enhanced vision and smell.
  • Superior Endurance: Strigoi can maintain physical performance longer than Dhampirs and Moroi and not be greatly fazed by attacks.
  • Superior Senses: They can see, taste, touch, and hear better than Moroi and Dhampirs.
  • Superior Speed: Strigoi are faster than dhampirs and Moroi. They can easily catch up to their Moroi, dhampir, or human prey.
  • Superior Strength: Strigoi are significantly stronger and more fit than dhampirs or Moroi. A single strigoi can brutally beat even a well-trained dhampir into submission.
  • Supernatural Beauty: Similarly to Moroi, Strigoi are attractive by human standards. It is unclear whether this applies to human-turned Strigoi; however, Moroi and Dhampir-turned Strigoi are described to retain their attractiveness, which is amplified even further by their newfound grace.
  • Supernatural Healing Factor: Strigoi heal and recover almost instantly from any injury besides a silver stake in their heart, decapitation, or being burned by fire or sunlight. Blood can make recovery even faster and easier.
  • Vampirization: Strigoi can turn a human, Dhampir, or Moroi into another of their kind if any one drinks any amount of their blood, usually by force. Moroi can turn themselves into Strigoi by killing or draining their victim when they feed.

Weaknesses[]

As a Moroi[]

  • Darkness: Using too much spirit can cause dark depression, outbursts of rage, violence, and insanity.
  • Mortality: Despite their healing factor, Moroi are still mortal and can die of advanced diseases, exsanguination, and severe injuries. They also weaken with age, just like humans.
  • Physical Weakness: Moroi aren't very strong physically and are absolutely no match for Strigoi. Compared to Dhampirs, Moroi are generally physically weaker and less nimble.
  • Sunlight: Moroi are sensitive to sunlight, and while exposure to sunlight is not lethal to Moroi, it is very uncomfortable.

As a Strigoi[]

  • Decapitation: Separating the head from the Strigoi's body will instantly kill them.
  • Fire: Fire is one of the four ways to kill a Strigoi; therefore, they tend to avoid it for fear of losing their immortality.
  • Oxygen Dependence: While Strigoi cannot die from suffocation, they still require oxygen and will lose consciousness if deprived of oxygen for too long.
  • Religious Symbols: Strigoi hate religion, holy water, saint crosses, and churches. They can't enter holy ground.
  • Silver Stake: The weapon damages the Strigoi's heart and kills them. A silver stake that is charmed with spirit magic can transform Strigoi back into their original form. A cut from a silver stake will cause them immense pain and has been described as feeling like acid being poured on their skin.
  • Sunlight: Strigoi burn when they are in direct sunlight. In the movie adaptation, Rosemarie has a flashlight with UV light, which causes their eyes to hurt.

Romances[]

Mikhail Tanner[]

Mikhail and Sonya were involved in a long-term romantic relationship (a rarity for a Moroi and a dhampir). After Sonya turned Strigoi, Mikhail tried to find her in order to kill her, but failed. When Sonya was restored, she and Mikhail reunited. They are married at a greenhouse in Pennsylvania, and both seem very happy.

Friends[]

Rosemarie Hathaway[]

Sonya was Rose's and Lissa's teacher at St. Vladimir's. She is the one who warned Rose about Lissa's ability to heal. After she is restored, she observes that Rose and Dimitri have very similar auras. She also helps heal Rose after her spirit-induced rage.

Sonya also made Rose one of her bridesmaids in her wedding, highlighting the strength of their friendship.

Robert Doru[]

Robert Doru was the Spirit user who restored Sonya. The pair had a somewhat hostile relationship, as Robert attempted to use compulsion on Sonya, who retaliated. In spite of this, the two spirit users combined to create an illusion in order to conceal the identities of both himself and his half-brother Victor Dashkov.

Dimitri Belikov[]

Although Sonya only met him after she was restored, they are good friends and colleagues, as they both share the burden of being former Strigoi. Both Sonya and Dimitri are working on experiments to see how restoration affects former Strigoi.

Adrian Ivashkov[]

Sonya and Adrian seem to be on good terms with each other, as they greet each other warmly at the end of Bloodlines. However, Adrian was mildly irritated by her talking about her upcoming wedding a lot, and her using his hairbrush. He also became extremely defensive when Sonya tried to pressure Sydney into donating some of her blood for the experiments.

Emily Mastrano[]

Emily is her cousin, and the two appear to have a sister-like relationship, as Emily is thrilled to see Sonya again and hugs her tightly.

Sydney Sage[]

Sydney and Sonya first met while Sonya was still Strigoi, and she threatened to kill all of them (starting with Sydney). Sydney was astonished by Sonya's restoration. It was Sydney who was able to persuade Sonya to show them the way to the house where Lissa's half-sibling lived. During The Golden Lily, Sydney eagerly asks Sonya about the spirit experiments. Although they briefly fell out when Sonya kept pressuring Sydney to donate blood for the experiments, they reconciled after Sonya was rescued from the Warriors of Light. She also seemed happy that Sydney was able to attend her wedding, although she seemed confused by what she perceived in both Adrian and Sydney's auras.

Jillian Mastrano Dragomir[]

It is presumed that Sonya and Jill have a close relationship, as Sonya is close to and cousins with Jill's mother, Emily Mastrano.

Trivia[]

  • Sonya Karp is portrayed by English actress, Claire Foy, in the film Vampire Academy.
  • Unlike Lee who loses his Moroi element power, Sonya kept her spirit powers after being returned to her Moroi state.
  • A change of Sonya's hair from the book to the film, as her hair is red in the novels while in the film it is dark brown.
  • Sonya, in Pilot, compliments the yellow that Lissa is wearing. This could be a nod to Lissa being a spirit user because, in the books, Spirit users auras are gold.
