Blood is family. Blood is pain. And blood is death.

Vasilisa Dragomir

Vampire Academy is the film adaptation of the book Vampire Academy. It is the first feature installment of the now-cancelled "Vampire Academy" series. The worldwide release was originally scheduled for February 14, 2014, but it got moved up a week to February 7. A sequel was never announced, resulting in a petition for a sequel to be made, which can be found here.[1] However, fans' attempts weren't futile, as they got a TV adaptation on Peacock in late 2022. Unfortunately, the TV adaptation was also cancelled after one season.

Story[]

St. Vladimir's Academy isn't just any boarding school – it's a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi vampire princess. They've been on the run, but now they're being dragged back to St. Vladimir's – the very place where they're most in danger.

Quotes[]

Handcuffs? There's gotta be a compliment there somewhere.

—Rose to Dimitri

Rose Hathaway: Comrade Belikov, they ran me ragged. What do you say we go easy today? Perhaps discuss a bit of theory?

Dimitri Belikov: Of course, Rose. I understand.
Rose Hathaway: How do you say "what a dick" in Russian?

—Rose and Dimitri training

Trivia[]

  • According to screenwriter and director, Lissa in the scenes where she cuts herself are magical instead of manual.
  • Rose's training increases a little as she learns how to use a silver stake earlier.
  • Rose instead breaks her ankle before the shopping scene and will not be after as it was in the book.
  • Strigoi are seen more to emphasize the danger throughout the film.
  • Uniforms are wore in the film to show the difference between a dhampir and a Moroi. A Moroi has a long skirt (female) or long pants (male) and a colored scarf and their school logo displays a red circle around their element. A dhampir has a shorter skirt (female) and long pants (male) and a red tie.
  • The film begins with the car crash that took the lives of Lissa's parents and her only brother.
  • When Rose goes into Lissa's head, her eyes turn a golden shade mixed with a jade-green color similar to Lissa's and her pupils disappear.
  • According to the 2014 Year Book in St. Vladimir's in the film, it is made fact that Rose, Lissa and Christian were all born in 1996 and Dimitri was born in 1989.

Development[]

The film rights to the Vampire Academy series were optioned out by Preger Entertainment in June of 2010. They made the announcement on July 6, 2010, that producer Don Murphy had joined them to assist in bringing the series to the big screen. On December 17, 2012, it was announced that Daniel Waters would be writing the script and that Mark Waters, his brother, would be directing.[2] Dan Waters, the director's brother, wrote the Vampire Academy script, which was based on the first book in the Richelle Mead series. The plan was to begin filming in the early summer.

Zoey Deutch and Australian actress Lucy Fry were cast as Rose and Lissa, respectively, and Russian actor Danila Kozlovsky was cast as Dimitri. These casting announcements were made on February 1, 2013. Zoey Deutch, Cameron Monaghan, and Danila Kozlovsky went through intense workouts and training to get ready for their roles as novice dhampirs and guardians. On April 1, 2013, the project received official approval. On their official Facebook page, the producers announced that Mark Waters, the director, had begun pre-production work in London and that principal photography would take place in the United Kingdom, with additional shooting planned in and around Montana in the United States.

Filming[]

The recording for Vampire Academy started on May 28, 2013, at Pinewood Studios, London. The film was shot both during the day and at night during the first half of June. On July 20, 2013, the filming officially came to an end. On July 21, the film officially entered post-production.
